During the week of November 21-25, the Software Engineering Team at AAPL Electronics Engineering achieved CMMI Level 2 Accreditation. CMMI stands for Capability Maturity Model Integration, originally (in its earlier CMM incarnation) a model for software quality, but now a model for quality of overall systems.
AAPL's goals were:
- Improve overall product QUALITY (with the implicit goal to present and market AAPL software to our customers as a supplier of high quality software).
- Achieve and sustain ZERO software errors after SVP (Start of Vehicle Production)
- Improve the accuracy of software effort estimation (compared to actual effort)
- Confirm the improvement results by achieving official CMMI Level 2 certification

Throughout the last five years AAPL has increased its electronics design and manufacturing capability to meet the rising demands of car manufacturers for more sophisticated functionality in modern cars. A significant portion of this increased functionality is met by software.

It is projected that the steady demand for software components in cars will rise steeply in the future, thus bringing forth the need to address software quality and maintainability. In 2003, AAPL Electronics Engineering formulated the goal to target software process improvement following the guidance and structure of the CMMI model.
